The primary purpose of the role is to work on number of research projects in the field of high-performance powertrains, within the Special Vehicle Operations Propulsion Department (SVO). This will include technologies such as fuel cell and electric drivetrain components, system architectures and topologies, control strategies, modelling and integration.




This role will contribute to the development of new technologies and features up to ‘Concept Ready’ within SVO, where it is then handed over to the delivery leads for application on vehicle programmes. This role will work together with the innovation leads from the SVO Battery, Electric Drive Unit (EDU) teams, creating & maintaining technology road maps, collectively appraising ideas and prioritising which ideas are taken through the concept phase.

The role will consist of a variety of tasks, from desktop resource, supplier visits, trade shows, academic institution engagement, through to delivery of concept demonstrator parts, systems or vehicles.

This role has a clear bias towards innovation for the high-performance and modern luxury attributes of SVO products, and as such, the focus may differ from ideas pursued by the core Product Engineering departments.


Key Responsibilities will include:


  • Lead the compilation and presentation of research funding requests, based on prioritised ideas and concepts to secure funding required.
  • Delivery of relevant research technologies and associated projects to ensure robust processes are realised on time and to Engineering Specification.
  • Supervise the team/outsource partners and develop implementation/activity plans for all research technologies to ensure robust processes are realised on time and to Engineering Specification.
  • Work with cross function and operational teams to ensure objectives and activity plans are captured in the overall project plans.
  • Contribute to the resolution of key technical and strategic challenges.
  • Work on the required technologies and features suitable for the future.
  • Develop of Proof-of-Concept technologies with support from key suppliers.
  • Supervise the team/development partners to record all data, ensure adherence to relevant procedures.
  • Work on the identification of the project roadmaps and work on assigned strategic University Research.
  • Manage projects towards the development of required technologies and features via the Technology Creation Development System process.
  • Ensure new and innovative ideas are put forward for patent filling.
  • Provide technical support on projects when handing over to mainstream engineering.
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested.




In order to be considered for this position it is advantageous to hold a formal qualification such as Degree within Engineering/Science or equivalent field, or equivalent level of experience.

The successful candidate needs to have previous experience in a Research role in a technology, engineering or automotive environment, demonstrable experience and knowledge in the field of relevant research technologies and strong technical and development expertise and experience of Technology Creation Development System or equivalent research delivery process.




  • Knowledge of other engineering disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Maths.   
  • Ability of resolution of the key technical issues within a team environment.
  • Ability to write reports and communicate to technical and non-technical audience.




  • A working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems and development processes, such as those used at Jaguar Land Rover.
  • Previous experience of working with Universities and Research partners.
