Opportunity

 

The Engine Validation and Power Conversion Function Lead Engineer is responsible for mechanical development, performance & functional verification and durability as part of the power unit design verification plan (DVP). They are principally responsible for ensuring the power conversion system functional and durability attributes are met across all JLR engine programmes.

 

The Development Engineer ultimately reports to the Engine Validation and Attributes Manager (LL6) for validation but may be allocated to a Module Lead (D) or Technical Lead (D) dependant on project requirements and specific team structure.

 

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Principally responsible for delivery of power unit functional, durability & attribute validation testing, ensuring validation test activity is delivered on time and to the required data quality and delivery standards.
  • Responsible for the power conversion system functional attributes and durability across multiple engine programmes with a significant contribution to the Failure Mode Avoidance activities for this system.
  • Ensure tests are executed safely to correct health and safety procedures. Ensure test procedures are adhered to and operating conditions are respected to produce high quality data.
  • Establish, maintain and inform accurate test plans, that clearly identify the timing and specific requirements of test facilities required. Ensure appropriate utilisation metrics are accurately completed and informed appropriately.
  • Support continuous improvement activity including creation and maintenance of JLR company standards relevant to role (TPJLR / STJLR).
  • Compile accurate technical reports for DV tests as evidence for component and system sign-off and informed clearly to all stakeholders.
  • Support relevant technical reviews and lead/support issue resolution through established processes and standard JLR tools (AIMS/8D).
  • Interface with customers of the department effectively. Lead interaction with customers and suppliers, resolving any conflicts and escalating issues for resolution as necessary.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential:

  • Strong technical background with knowledge of engine components and systems, in particular the power conversion system (crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, bearings and major castings).
  • Some experience of automotive component/system validation.
  • Highly self-motivated and able to act on initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels within business.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline.
  • Able to prioritise & derive workload and lead key responsibilities both individually and contribute/lead a cross-functional team.
  • Knowledge of problem resolution and quality tools with a structured, logical and objective based approach to all aspects of the role.
  • Experience and proficiency in data processing (in any: Excel VBA, Matlab, Python, variants of C, Minitab, Tableau).

 

Desirable:

  • Experience of issue resolution within a project team environment.
  • Good working knowledge of automotive Product Creation Delivery System (or similar process).
  • Use of software programming to assist efficient data processing (Excel VBA, Matlab, Concerto Scripting).
  • Understanding of internal combustion engine design architecture in an automotive engineering environment.
