The position is responsible for filing and prosecuting JLR’s patent applications worldwide across various technologies, providing opinions on infringement and validity of JLR’s and third-party patents and supporting patent monetisation and litigation activities. The position will, in time, have at one direct patent attorney report and the candidate will be responsible for managing, training and supervising them.


In your role you’ll be responsible for:


  • Implementing, enhancing and managing an efficient patent fling and prosecution process which ensures high quality granted patents within budget.
  • Supervising, performance-managing and professionally training their direct report and assisting in delivering supervision and training to other lower grade department members.
  • Reviewing and quality-checking patent drafts prepared by outside counsel.
  • Filing and prosecuting patent applications before various national patent offices, including conducting oral hearings.
  • Providing IP awareness training to company engineering and design staff.
  • Maintaining up to date records of commercial use of patented inventions through regular interaction with inventors.
  • Assessing and providing opinions on infringement of company patent rights by third parties.
  • Supporting contentious IP matters including assertion of company patent rights against infringers and defending the company against third party patent assertions.






  • Qualified Patent Attorney
  • Post qualification experience in corporate or private practice
  • Background in/experience of Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive Engineering or other appropriate discipline;
  • High level of knowledge and experience of global patent prosecution processes and strategies, particularly EP, US, CN and JP
  • Good knowledge and experience of patent exploitation/licensing strategies




  • Experience in corporate patent department
  • Good knowledge and understanding of general IP contractual terms
  • Good understanding and experience of patent FTO work, opposition and/or litigation
