JOB TITLE: Planning and Conformance Lead Engineer
SALARY: £41,600 £50,000

Jaguar Land Rover has made a major investment in new testing capability to ensure future Powertrain development can take place and meet the business requirement to develop new and exciting products. A facility has been specified that was established in late 2017 that is state of the art and provides a unique opportunity for testing of complete vehicle Powertrains.


In this role you will be responsible for establishing and leading the Powertrain Test Bed (PTTB) scheduling and conformance activity within Engineering Operations.


The first part of the role will involve extracting, analysing, and forecasting against PTTB information required to inform the effective data driven planning of test activity. This will be done by working closely with the product and / or programmes teams and stakeholders to ensure the accuracy of the information and data gathered. Where product or programme teams and other stakeholders are not able to provide robust data, you will be required to estimate their forecast using synthetics that are to be developed and declared when used while always stating the margin of error probability.


The second part of the role will involve process innovation, establishment, implementation and conformance to it. This will be done by working closely with other departments and stakeholder within the Engineering Operations team, the own team and the internal stakeholder groups. This part of the job will demand strong leadership because when agreed plans are deviated from you will be required to influence accordingly and use escalation routes appropriately.


You will organise, support and service meetings with the Engineering managers and Chiefs at appropriate intervals by providing the robust data required on own team test capability, and capacity.


Additionally, you will be required to hold and maintain departmental Opex and Capex information and the initiative to build a strong financial business case for PTTB area working with available data.


Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Lead process creation / implementation / adherence (cadence/meetings/outputs) and govern it effectively to help transform engineering operations into a test factory
  • Facilitate continuous improvement towards improving, establishing and simplifying current business operation
  • Lead the production of Test Specification, detailing the System under Test (SuT) design, all hard and soft interfaces, test cycle requirements and any other information required to adequately set-up and control the test, this should include a SuT commissioning plan.
  • Lead development of new processes to standardise the delivery of commodities and reduce late change.
  • Maintaining forecasts from customer inputs, generation of facility capacity plans, evaluation and reporting of resource concerns/constraints.
  • Establish and lead departmental test planning activity.
  • Meet with product / programme teams and stakeholders to gather data driven evidence.
  • Work closely with the product and / or programme teams and stakeholders to understand planning – proactively schedule
  • Develop appropriate and robust metrics in conjunction with other departments
  • Understand and report accurately on the delivery of new facilities to support product / programme demand.
  • Organise, support and service alignment meetings
  • Resource key management personnel prior to the alignment meetings with robust data driven information to support effective decision making.
  • Influence appropriately (use escalation when required) at the earliest possible opportunity where agreed plans and processes are deviated from.
  • Facilitate/support/lead continuous improvement activity with the goal of improving test efficiency and/or product quality
  • Facilitate/support/lead all activities that result in a positive outcome from any audit, e.g., IATF (International Automotive Task Force) 16949, OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification) 18001, ISO (International Standards Organisation) 14001
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested.



  • Automotive product understanding
  • Project planning/management.
  • Ability to challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust through experience and personal style.
  • Experience complex facility operations
  • Mechanical (all disciplines), Electrical, Electronics, Controls or Systems Engineer to degree level
  • Practical experience in mechanical, electrical and/or control systems and complex system interactions
  • Systems engineering fundamentals (ideally automotive)
  • Strong problem solving techniques and fault finding skills;
  • Strong experience of data analysis and reporting.
  • Able to work independently, as well as achieve the full benefits of collective effort from a wider team.  
  • Clear and confident communicator  
  • Proven ability to plan effectively and achieve quality results.
  • Natural problem-solver with structured approach to problem solving in a technical environment.
  • Ability to accurately and concisely present complex technical ideas or project issues to a diverse audience
  • Customer-first attitude with a passion for continuous improvement 
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office competency to produce plans, presentations, graphs, process, and Single Point Lesson (SPL) documents.
  • A full UK driving license with less than 6 penalty points, no disqualification, 2 years accident-free record.


  • Six Sigma, Black Belt or Green Belt Training and certification.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Powertrain products.
  • Experience with TS16949 or ISO9001 standards and requirements
  • Presents technical accomplishments – internal and external to JLR
